Sake Sets

Sake sets are the items used to serve the alcoholic rice drink. A basic set consists of a flask and cups. These are commonly created from ceramic, but also may be purchased in glass or lacquered plastic versions.

Traditionally, wooden boxes known as masu served as the cup portion of sake sets. As the drink was originally brewed in a wooden cask, masu were said to compliment the taste, being of the same material source. Today, however, it is felt that the wood affects the taste of the sake and should not be used.

Tokkuri are the flasks used in sake sets. These come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Some have spouts and some do not. They often have a narrow neck which aids in the heating of the beverage. The tokkuri is set within a pan of hot water, and the narrow neck serves to better retain heat.
