Hot Sake

Hot sake has been mentioned in many Anglophone stories and films. For example, in the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice, Sean Connery makes reference to the drink being served at the temperature of 98.4°F. Though many Westerners associate the drink with warm temperatures, this is not the way it is meant to be served.

Originally, it was more normal to drink hot sake. However, around thirty to forty years ago new brewing options allowed for more subtle varieties of the beverage. Many of these aromas and flavors are better enhanced at a slightly chilled temperature. Sake that is served hot is generally presented that way to mask lower quality.

There are, however, a few fine quality types which work well as hot sake. The drinks “Farmer’s Daughter” and “Three Dots” are examples of this. Both are considered fine quality drinks which may also be served cold.
